Missing Hood Latches Cause GMC Recall of 118,800 Vehicles

General Motors LLC recently issued a recall in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concerning 118,800 of their vehicles. According to NHTSA reports, the recall is due to Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon vehicles missing secondary latches on their hoods.

The role of a secondary latch is to prevent a hood from coming loose in the event that the primary hood latch did not lock properly. These latches keep human errors and latch problems from becoming the cause of a major accident. If a car lacks a second hood latch and the hood is not locked properly, the hood could come flying up at any moment while driving. At high enough speeds, the wind from driving can catch underneath the hood and lift it all the way up, completely blocking the front window and easily leading to a car crash.

Beyond simple safety matters, lack of a second hood latch is a violation of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 113, “Hood Latch System.”

Vehicles affected by this recall are Chevrolet Colorados from model years 2010 to 2012 and GMC Canyons from 2010 to 2012. General Motors will begin the recall on January 17, 2013, during which time they will inspect vehicles for hood latches and replace the hoods on any vehicles missing them, completely free of charge. To learn more, owners can call Chevrolet at (800) 630-2438 or GMC at (866) 996-9463, and the GM campaign number for the recall is 12319.
