Michael Kopple, John C. Carpenter, and Sark Ohanian were recognized for their $6,897,000 verdict in a premises liability case – Frank v. Gaslamp Bar and Restaurant.

Kenneth Frank suffered a traumatic brain injury after being punched by a security guard outside a bar. The defendant security company had no insurance and declared bankruptcy during litigation. Allied, the bar’s insurer, refused to provide coverage to the individual security guard.  As such, plaintiff’s counsel had to prove that security guard was an agent and/or employee of the insured bar. The first trial resulted in a hung jury and a settlement offer of $200,000. CZ&R refused to settle and re-tried the case, resulting in a verdict of $6,897,000 on $22,829 in past medical bills. The insurer valued the case at less than the cost of defense.

Nicholas C. Rowley was recognized for his $31,600,000 verdict in a Traumatic Brain Injury case – Landeros v. Torres.
