Los Angeles Company Recalls Ground Beef for Potential E. coli Contamination

Commercial Meat Co., a Los Angeles based meat company, is recalling more than 375,000 pounds of ground beef products because of a possible E. coli contamination. A routine monitoring of this company’s meat conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) on Tuesday, October 11, produced a positive test for E. coli. The recalled ground beef products were shipped to various restaurants in California and Nevada, but fortunately no known illnesses have been reported at this time.

The potentially contaminated beef was produced between September 7 and October 6, and all cases of the ground beef with the number “EST. 4873” inside the USDA mark of inspection are being recalled. Individuals with weak immune systems, the elderly, and very young people are most susceptible to food borne illnesses, so anyone concerned about a possible illness should contact a healthcare provider immediately. E. coli is a bacterium that is potentially deadly and can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and in severe cases, kidney failure. For questions regarding this recall, consumers can call Neil Brown, manager of Commercial Meat Co., at (213) 622-6997.
