Listeriosis Outbreak Linked to Cheeses Sold at Whole Foods

hands_hospital_10507660-300x199A recent multi-state outbreak of the rare and deadly listeriosis disease has been linked to cheeses produced by Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese, which are sold online and at Whole Foods stores throughout the U.S. Five people have been hospitalized and one elderly person has died after consuming the contaminated food, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is also believed that one illness in a pregnant woman resulted in a miscarriage.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture conducted laboratory tests on samples of the Crave Brothers’ cheeses and found the presence of listeria monocytogenes bacteria. When consumed, the bacterium can develop into listeriosis, a potentially fatal disease that causes fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal issues.

The infection is particularly dangerous for those with weakened immune systems, such as older adults, pregnant women, or newborns. Pregnant women are at a high risk of suffering a miscarriage or stillbirth if they contract the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The Crave Brothers have voluntarily recalled the contaminated cheeses, which are sold under the names Les Freres, Petit Frere, and Petit Frere with truffles. Whole Foods has notified customers of the recall and advised any who may have bought the cheese to throw it out and return with a receipt for a full refund.

Contaminated or defective products can have widespread consequences, as seen with the most recent listeria outbreak. A Beverly Hills product liabilities lawyer at Carpenter, Zuckerman & Rowley can help protect your rights if you have been harmed or lost a loved one due to manufacture negligence or oversight.
