Keep Your Loved Ones Safe: Recognize the Signs of Nursing Home Abuse

Nursing Home Abuse SignsNursing homes in southern California are meant to provide the care that family members cannot give their elderly loved ones. Unfortunately, many nursing home residents suffer serious abuse and neglect from the staff of these homes. While many residents will never experience elder abuse in southern California, it is important for loved ones to be aware of the signs of abuse to prevent such incidents from occurring.

  • Physical Abuse: Physical force, such as hitting, shoving, or other violence, can cause bruises, bone fractures, sprains, welts, bleeding, dislocations, and restraint marks. Also, be aware of an elder’s sudden change in behavior and any caregiver’s refusal to allow visitors to see loved ones alone.
  • Sexual Abuse: Non-consensual sexual contact of any kind is sexual abuse. Look out for bruises or bleeding around private parts, unexplained sexual diseases or infections, torn, stained, or bloody clothing, or changes in behavior.
  • Emotional Abuse: Inflicting anguish, pain, or distress can cause an elder to be upset, agitated, extremely withdrawn, non-communicative, experiencing behavior similar to dementia, or any other strange changes in behavior.
  • Neglect: A resident who has been neglected by staff can experience malnutrition, untreated injuries and health problems, poor hygiene, unsanitary living conditions, and dehydration.
  • Financial Abuse: Staff may illegally gain access to a resident’s finances for their personal use. Look out for abrupt changes in a will or other documents, sudden changes in funds and other finances, possible forged documents, and other unexplained changes related to finances.
