Keep Your Child Safe, Follow Guidelines from Child Passenger Safety Week

Car accidents are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 12 years old in the United States, but it doesn’t have to be. As such, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is holding Child Passenger Safety Week from September 16 – 22, along with National Seat Check Saturday.

As part of the week, the NHTSA has made various recommendations to parents when it comes to installing and maintaining child safety seats. Having your child properly restrained in the car is the best protection against serious injuries in the event of a southern California car crash, but improper restraints can cause severe injuries.

Car Seat Safety

Car seats should be chosen based on a child’s age and size, and these seats must properly fit in the vehicle and be used every time the child is riding in the vehicle. Parents should read both the seat and car manuals concerning use of child seats in order to install and restrain them properly. Additionally, child safety seats should be used for as long as possible, so long as the child is within the height and weight requirements. Finally, a child through the age of 12 should never ride in the front seat. Being in the back will give them the best protection possible during a car crash.

Seat Check Saturday will be held at organizations across southern California and throughout the nation on September 22, where safety technicians will check car seats for proper installation and advise child caregivers on how to maintain their child’s safety in their vehicles. Unfortunately, even the best precautions cannot prevent an injury caused by a defective car sat. Often, such defects slip by manufacturers and endanger the health and safety of children, and the seat meant to protect them no longer provides the care they need, often without any signs of danger.
