The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced that the multistate outbreak of hepatitis A that began in March of this year is still ongoing. The CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that the outbreak was linked to contaminated pomegranate seeds from Turkey used in Townsend Farms’ Organic Antioxidant Blend and sold at Costco stores throughout the U.S. While the frozen berry and pomegranate mix was recalled in June 2013, the CDC believes that there is still a risk that consumers may still have the contaminated product in their freezers.
According to the CDC, there have been 147 confirmed illnesses in eight states, and 63 victims were hospitalized as a result of the virus. Consumers are advised to dispose of the Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend with the label UPC 0 78414 4044 8, and to wash their hands immediately after handling.
Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that is more prevalent in the Middle East and North Africa. Symptoms include yellow eyes and skin, nausea, fever, dark urine, and abdominal cramps.
