Distracted Walking an Increasing Cause of Southern California Pedestrian Accidents

Accident statistics and studies from across the United States have brought the attention of government officials to the occurrence of distracted walking and pedestrian accidents. As reported by The Associated Press, the act of walking while talking or texting on cell phones has resulted in large amounts of pedestrian accidents in southern California and across the nation.

Over the past seven years, the amount of injured victims admitted to hospitals due to distracted walking accidents has increased by more than 400 percent, with many more incidents believed to be unreported. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) has revealed that officials understand that it is a major problem, but don’t have the data in order to fully understand its scope.

Distracted Walking an Increasing Cause of Southern California Pedestrian Accidents

In 2011, approximately 1,152 people underwent hospital treatment in the United States for accidents that occurred while walking and using an electronic device; however, many pedestrian accident victims do not report that they were participating in such actions during an accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian fatalities rose by 4.2 percent and injuries increased 19 percent in 2010, although overall traffic accident deaths decreased.

Cell phones, music players, and portable video games can cause serious distractions for pedestrians as they take their eyes off the road and their focus off of the possible hazards around them. Additionally, wearing headphones will also keep pedestrians from hearing what is around them, such as the horns used by cars and trains to warn pedestrians of their presence.

However, the majority of pedestrian accidents are due to the negligent or reckless actions of drivers.
