Californians Reminded of Holiday Weekend Risks with Labor Day Weekend “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Campaign

Special law enforcement mobilizations were in effect from August 19 through September 5 in California and throughout the United States to help prevent drunk driving accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) impaired driving campaign, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”, focused on educating the public about the many dangers of drunk driving in combination with high-visibility law enforcement to help decrease the tragically high number of celebratory weekend fatalities.

With the help of about 41 countywide Avoid DUI task forces and 111 individual local jurisdictions, 98 percent of the California’s population had extra sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols during the campaign.

Considering there were 3,081 California drunk driving accident fatalities in 2009, campaigns such as this one do a great service in helping to make roadways safer. During holiday weekends, people tend to travel more, therefore increasing the number of drivers on the road. The risks of auto accidents happening because of driver fatigue, distracted driving, or dangerous roadways are high enough without drunk driving playing role. Sadly, drunk driving is responsible for killing an average of 11,000 people each year. According to the NHTSA, between midnight and three a.m. a person is killed in an alcohol-related crash every 23 minutes.
