I began my legal career as an extern for the Kansas City Public Defender’s office. About once a week I would go to the downtown jail and meet with defendants that were charged with first degree murder to manslaughter. On any particular day I could meet up to five defendants, all of which had an upcoming jury trial to decide whether they would be free or spend much of their life in jail. It was at this point, my final year in law school, that I understood the importance of a jury trial.
From the time I graduated law school, my one goal was to help those in need by taking cases to trial.
In the last five years, I’ve tried more than 15 jury trials across California. I’ve tried civil cases in front of juries in Sonoma, San Francisco, Marin, San Bernardino, Santa Monica, Downtown Los Angeles, Van Nuys, Riverside, Chatsworth and Orange County. I’ve also tried criminal cases for the District Attorney’s Office as a volunteer in East Los Angeles and Compton.
As a trial attorney, I believe that you have to constantly be practicing the art of the communication. I’ve been a member of Mid-Wilshire Toastmasters since 2011 and in 2015 I won the Humorous Speech competition for both the Beverly Hills chapter and the Area B5 contest.
In 2016 I was named a Super Lawyers “Rising Star” in the area of personal injury litigation. Rising Star attorneys represent the Top 2.5% of their profession in Southern California for lawyers 40 years old and younger.
I graduated from the University of Kansas in 2004 and received my Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law in 2007.
If any young attorney has a question about becoming a trial attorney, please call me at the office and I’d be happy to help.
